All In A Snail Shell

August 29, 2007

I had a bit of a rough start to my work week and decided that writing a story would make me feel better. It did, and here is the story:   http://shewolfy728.wordpress.com/2007/08/29/all-in-a-snail-shell/

My Wonderful Boy

August 27, 2007

Last Friday night I was proud to accept an award on behalf of my eldest son, The Soccer Star (who shall be known from now on as The Poet).

He won second prize in The Randolph Stow Young Writers Award in the Lower Primary Poetry category.

His poem, Anger, was inspired by a prompt from Heather’s Magic Writing Tram website

ANGER

Anger

Smells like smoke

Tastes like burnt toast

Sounds like an almighty explosion

Feels like you are on fire

Feels like time goes on forever

Feels like you will never release your tension

Anger

Randolph Stow grew up in Geraldton and the book The Merry Go Round In The Sea describes his life as a young boy in and around the town. The merry go round of the title is still standing as is the huge old Moreton Bay fig that grows beside it.  However The Poet and I both love his children’s novel Midnite, the story of a wild colonial boy, the best.

I am so proud of my boy and I wanted to share!

My Raven Cards

August 16, 2007

Like with most everything I do, I researched Raven images before I began painting my cards.  First I looked through my “Reading the Maya Glyphs” book by Michael D. Coe because I knew (my Master’s is in Maya Art and Architecture and included learning how to read some Maya glyphs) that there were some that said “….is the totem spirit of…”, so I could use one of those along with a Raven glyph to say (sort of!) “The Raven is the Totem Spirit of…..” and then add the person’s name.  Then I looked for Aboriginal Australian and Native American representations of Ravens to use as inspiration for different cards.  I chose watercolor on card stock as my medium as I felt it had the needed flexibility and fluidity for what I envisioned.  You can see the results here:

Happy birthday for sylvia, and read my blog post if you like a good rant…

August 16, 2007

happy birthday sylvia

Have a blast and make it last all week.

and the blog posting:
excerpt:
“…I really did try to keep costs down but I was fighting a losing battle. The prices have all gone up, and with my energies drained by tougher days I bought the more convenient foods often because there was no energy for preparing and no one to help me out. I also had been forced to spend lots more running the household due to the bedbug problem in my building.
Horrifying sometimes living in a building full of crack dealers, prostitutes and disabled who cannot do their own housekeeping but get no help, and those of us who also live here have to try and deal with bugs and mice and cold. The apartment next to ours has been closed due to mold infestation by the board of health and is still waiting to be cleaned up. Yes, it worries me, but I have no options for going anywhere else. So we do what we can to keep it liveable in here…”

Some Small Reward

strawberry pot
The strawberry plant seems to be offering up some goodies in return for my vigilant watering, not exactly farming, but a result all the same.

Two New Posts…

August 6, 2007

…we have been much at work in our Native American garden, and Marcel keeps popping up where you least expect him- although not in the garden yet.  Probably bad for his allergies.  Come sit a spell under our pergola and enjoy a plate of madeleines and lemon-flower tea.

August 2, 2007

Sometimes it pays to listen to the neighborhood folklore – before you get into trouble….
